The objective of the text is to present the question of university management, highlighting some characteristics and principles that permeate it and, more concretely, to problematize it from the perception and praxis of the coordinator of the body collegiate of a pedagogy course, of a public university. For this, through the bibliographic and documentary survey, historical elements of Higher Education in Brazil are presented and, in the semi-structured interview, the coordinator's understanding of the managerial action developed in the collegiate body is verified. This practice is oriented (or not) by the theoretical references that deal with the theme and, more specifically, is anchored in the principles of democratic management. This study is contained in a broader survey that includes other colleges and management bodies as research spaces. The results reveal an effort, linked to the administrative activities of the university, to carry out a democratic management - albeit with evident weaknesses -, surpassing the managerial practices and strengthening the social function of the university.
