GÊNERO, PERFORMANCE E PRESENÇA EM UM CERTO CAPITÃO RODRIGO, DE ERICO VERISSIMO

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the character Rodrigo Cambará in Um certo capitão Rodrigo, part of the trilogy O tempo e o vento, by Erico Verissimo. We will use concepts associated to what is used to be called as non-hermeneutic field, which prioritizes material aspects associated to body, presence, orality, clothing and performance. We will use the theoretical approach from authors such as Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, Paul Zumthor and Judith Butler in order to understand the material construction of gender, as well as Joan Scott to for the approach of the centrality of gender as a category of analysis in the academic debate from 1990’s onwards. We will also demonstrate the ways in which Rodrigo Cambará’s figure does not correspond to an idealized characterization of the gaucho, allowing us to identify traces of what became known, in the literature of the Prata River, as sly gaucho. This article seeks to broaden the potencialities of analysis of the phenomena involving gender and materiality having canonical literary works as a basis for this analysis, providing new reading perspectives for these works.
